The Embsay Steam Railway

The Embsay Steam Railway runs between Embsay Station (near Skipton in Yorkshire) to a station at Bolton Abbey, over part of the old Skipton to Ilkley line.   The line from Skipton to Ilkley was originally opened in 1888 by the Midland Railway.   It was the infamous Dr Beeching who decided that in March 1965 the line would be closed from Embsay Junction to Ilkley.   It was not until 1970 that preservationists decided to reopen the line.   The original aim was to re-open the Skipton to Grassington line, which was also threatened with closure.   However this line remained operational for the use of freight trains carrying stone from Swinden Quarry.

Class 107 Ltd have been operating over the Embsay Steam Railway for several years.   Much restoration work has been carried out form Bolton Abbey Station, where the class 107 vehicles are based.
